* HABIB SUBAH este dublu campion al emiratului Bahrain si a fost semifinalist IBSF World Amateur Championship anul trecut, dar meciul de azi a fost primul dintr-un turneu profesionist. Sabah patrunde in seria "ultimilor 32" ai competitiei si il va intilni pe STEPHEN LEE : "I was shaking ( ) at the start of the match but after a few minutes I was fine.To win my first match on television is very special. I’m sure my supporters back in Bahrain will be pleased for me - I’m waiting for their calls! Stephen Lee is one of the best players in the world. But if I keep playing well and get a bit of luck then who knows? I’ve got nothing to lose and it’s good experience for me to be taking on the top players."

I’ve had a good season and it looks like I’m back in the top 32, but this is a sad end. After being knocked out of the worlds I came here with not a lot of self-belief."

But hopefully I can have a good end to the season here. I’ve got a good chance of making the top 32 and if I can reach the quarter-finals here that would virtually guarantee it. I hardly slept a wink last night but I’m hoping to go and see the Great Wall and Tiananmen Square tomorrow. I know Jin is a good player but at least that means there are no surprises and you can motivate yourself because you know you are in for a tough match. He made some good breaks so I’m very pleased to get through."

* “The Guardian”, azi, 28 : O'Sullivan stays at home and China's credibility suffers

The China Open got under way at the Haidian Stadium yesterday without the game's biggest attraction and most dominant force. Ronnie O'Sullivan's decision not to compete in the final event before next month's Embassy World Championship in Sheffield deals a blow to the Beijing tournament, snooker's future in China and possibly to the world No1's finances.
O'Sullivan informed the organisers on Friday that he would not be on the plane because he was ill. However, he may face a fine for refusing to play after stating as far back as November that he did not want to make the journey to the far east.
At the Welsh Open in January the world champion revealed he would be seeking financial incentives to go from the WPBSA, the sport's governing body. "They have to make it worthwhile for me to travel 17 hours. I just don't think it's worth it." In February O'Sullivan met with a senior WPBSA executive but it is not thought that any appearance money was offered. With sponsorship dwindling in Britain, China is a vital market for snooker's future. The sport is growing in popularity here with 300 clubs in Beijing alone. O'Sullivan's non-attendance is consequently a blow to the credibility of the sixth ranking event to be staged in China since 1990 and is unlikely to endear the game to Chinese broadcasters and sponsors.

* “The Sunday Times”: So prestigious is this tournament that world No 1 Ronnie O’Sullivan threatened to stay at home — to watch The Boat Race, presumably. When snooker is struggling to find sponsors, it doesn’t send out a great message, does it?

* ANTHONY HAMILTON : "You've got to come away and try to promote the game overseas, especially here because this place is the future. It's a shame certain people don't recognise that or, if they do, blatantly ignore it."

* KEN DOHERTY : "Snooker shouldn't just be about the UK and Ireland. If we want the game to grow we have to take it to Europe and Asia. It's our duty to come because snooker gives us a living. Some players don't respect the life it's given them. They should think how lucky they are. People look up to us so we should do our best to help snooker grow. We need to make it more international and you'll only do that if you come and promote the game. That's the purpose of coming to places like Malta. We may be playing for less prize money but that's how the game is at the moment."
