Tot istorie, dar una neconventionala. M-am gandit sa va ofer cateva momente, declaratii si comentarii inedite de la editia din 2004, asa, spre aducere-aminte. Materialul este foarte liber adaptat dupa cel semnat de Phil Harlow, Julian Slee si Dan Waren, aflat in arhiva BBC.
Ziua 2, turul 1; Altercatia Hicks/Hann
Dupa meciul pierdut, Hann il informeaza pe Hicks ca va fi intotdeauna "short and bald" si il invita afara, la o discutie Annandale intervine si ii separa, ca la box.Hicks isi pastreaza calmul.
Ziua 3; Ebdon/McCulloch Dupa victoria muncita a lui Ian asupra lui Peter,invingatorul recunoaste: "I was thinking about what my wife would say if I got beaten."
Ziua 5 Conferinta de presa de dupa meciul O'Sullivan/Maguire
Ronnie, proaspat si frustrat nefumator, explodeaza cand i se pun intrebari despre asta. Apoi vine cu o idee grozava :" It would be great to have all the exciting players in one tournament, leave the ones who aren't so exciting to play in their own tournament and just invite the players who like to play snooker."
Ziua 6 O'Sullivan/Hicks
Ronnie cedeaza frame-ul manevrand o bila rosie pe cand Hicks isi construia inca break-ul si paraseste arena. Hicks, indarjit de confruntarea cu Hann, raspunde ulterior cu aceeasi moneda.
Ziua 7 Acelasi meci
Ronnie reuseste 5 break-uri fantastice de peste 100; mai reuseste sa dea un pumn in masa, sa faca mai multe gesturi sugestive si sa ne testeze abilitatea de a citi pe buze cateva mostre de engleza neacademica.
Turul 2, Hunter/Stevens
Hunter se chinuie sa-si infilleteze prelungitorul de tac.Dupa cateva tentative nereusite, Stevens se ridica din fotoliu si rezolva problema.
Ziua 8, Turul 2, Hunter/Stevens
Meciul a avut nevoie de joc decisiv.La Sfasitul unei confruntari de epice proportii, cei doi se imbratiseaza cu caldura. Stevens merge mai departe.
Williams/Perry
Williams, devenit in urma cu o saptamana tatic, se consoleaza in urma infrangerii in fata lui Perry: I've got plenty of nappy changing ahead of me now, that's my punishment for losing, I suppose. :lol:Si mai zice proaspatul tatic despre Connor/Conor: "He's been sleeping well apparently but that will probably change once I get back."
Ziua 10, Sferturi, Higgie/Dott
Higgie urmarea un 147. Reuseste 11 rosii cu 11 negre, pierde pozitia la a 12-a rosie. Apoi the Wizard of Wishaw reuseste urmatoarea rosie cu o lovitura prin ricoseu, executata cu aplomb si draceasca aroganta. Dupa care o zbarceste la urmatoarea neagra si strica tot.
Ziua 11, Sferturi, Hamilton/O'Sullivan
Ronnie castiga meciul cu Andy mai mult ca spectator. Robin Hood il complimenteaza spunand ca daca ar juca numai cu stanga ar intra sigur in top 64."Me? Left-handed I'd probably make the top 64 million!" Dupa 3 zile Ronnie da replica: "I might paly the next season left-handed. But I reckon I'm a top-16 player." Cata modestie!!
Ziua 12
Dupa prima semifinala din cariera, Dott spune ca s-a indragostit din nou de snooker. "I know a lot of people say they are on the verge of quitting snooker ( Ronnie) but seriously, I would have done it.i would have given up. But I cannae do anything else, so I carried on."
Ziua 15
Hunter reia scenariul filmului "Propunere indecenta", oferindu-i bunului sau prieten Matthew compania logodnicei sale pentru o noapte, daca acesta din urma castiga titlul. Stresat de perspectiva, Stevens pierde la Dott. Subtila razbunare a lui Paul...
Ziua 16 Finala Dott/O'Sullivan
Dupa stupefianta semifinala contra lui Hendry,fanii lui Ronnie privesc opariti tabela de scor. Graeme-Ronnie 5-0. Apoi Ronnie castiga primul frame si -si flutura tacul in directia suporterilor. Aplauze ironice.
Ziua 17
Un cetatean imbracat numai cu tupeul propriu da buzna in arena in timpul ultimei sesiuni. Urmeaza agitatie si taraboi. Dott culege un nasture cazut pe jos si i-l ofera, pe post de frunza de vita. "It was more than big enough to cover up his 'cue' ", zice Dott. Ronnie ramane imperturbabil si isi asigura victoria in mai putin de 20 de minute.
La conferinta de presa de dupa meci, Dott isi apara onoarea:" Ye've all been saying I only brought two shirts to the tournament.It's nae true! I've brought three!" Cu 125000 GBP isi permite sa-si mai ia.

Sper ca v-a placut. Cred ca avem cu totii nevoie de un pic de destindere cand obosim de atatea statistici, stiri si analize detaliate sau cand ne joaca favoritii si suntem prea tensionati. Ce parere aveti?

Miss Chigwell m-ai facut sa rad cu lacrimi! Daca si campionatul de anul asta o sa aiba macar jumatate din nazbatiile de anul trecut atunci e clar ca ne asteapta un spectacol pe cinste.

Departe de mine gandul de a mimimaliza importanta analizelor si statisticilor. Sunt esentiale in orice sport si cruciale in snooker.Si tot respectul meu fanilor extrem de bine documentati de pe acest forum. Dar... a bit of laughter never hurt anyone.
Si apropo de asta, uitasem sa scriu despre omagiul neconventional adus de Ronnie lui Ray Reardon, dupa victorie, si anume perechea de colti falsi cu care s-a dotat, vampire-style. Spre marea noastra dezamagire, nu s-a repezit la vreo demoazela din public, sa-i murmure languros la ureche "Thu yesti dragostea vietsii miele " (vezi Johnny Depp)
Gata, m-am facut om serios. Pentru o vreme, cel putin.

Chiar ca nu strica sa mai radem cate un pic de eroii nostri din snooker si de situatiile create de ei. Snookerul este un joc foarte serios, dar e bine sa ne si destindem un pic.

Va multumesc tuturor pentru aprecieri. Si ca sa-mi fac un pic de reclama, va anunt ca este in pregatire un material special, dedicat catre "The Ronnettes" ale forumului nostru. O sa-l postez mai incolo, la topicul adecvat, ca sa nu spuneti ca mi-am asumat "pour toujours" rolul de Miss Chigwell The Entertainer .Si ca sa nu-mi subminez imaginea de fan serios, nu numai a lui Ronnie, dar a snooker-ului in general.

Abia acum am apucat sa citesc topicul asta. FELICITARI, my dear! Uitasem de entuziasmul asteptarii campionatului mondial. Acum mi l-ai redat. Mi-a facut foarte mare placere sa imi reamintesc lucrurile de anul trecut. Puse cap la cap si adunate sunt si mai amuzante. Si mai e ceva... toate fazele astea le intelegi cu adevarat si te amuzi doar atunci cand ai fost martor la ele efectiv la vremea lor. Pentru majoritatea oamenilor, pobabil ca nu ar insemna mare lucru. 8)

ACUM 20 DE ANI

Protagonistii : englezul STEVE DAVIS, favorit si nord-irlandezul DENNIS TAYLOR, outsider
Format : best of 35

Dupa prima sesiune, scorul era 8-0 pentru Steve. Apoi, 9-7 pentru Steve. In fine, ore si ore mai tirziu, 17-17. Apoi, in frame-ul decisiv, jocul la bila neagra. Si 18-17 pentru Dennis Taylor. "A bit of a match," asta e tot ce a putut sa-i spuna invingatorul invinsului, la sfirsit...

DENNIS TAYLOR isi aminteste : “Usually you're pretty exhausted in the rounds leading up to a World Championship final. I remember being shattered when I got to the 1979 final where I had to face Terry Griffiths. This time round, I'd won my quarter-final and semi-final with a session to spare. I was feeling great. I'd had some battles with Steve in the past. He had beaten me 9-0 in the final of the 1981 Jameson International. After I went 8-0 behind in the 1985 Crucible final, I thought the same was going to happen again. But I hung in there and battled so hard. When I got back to 9-7, it was a whole new game.

He was always favourite during that match, though, because whenever I'd fought back he'd pull away and was always two frames ahead. At 17-15, I thought my chance had gone again. But obviously, that was not the case. We didn't know how massive this match was at the time and what was going on at home. It was pure fluke that there happened to be a fella in the little town I'm from who taped what happened in the streets after the final. It was amazing to see people partying at 3am, some with children in their arms.

I suppose everyone wanted me to win because I was such an underdog. Also, everyone knew I'd lost my mother, who was only 62, to a massive heart attack a few weeks earlier, so there was this huge wave of sympathy. I received thousands of letters and I can honestly say there's never a day goes by without someone mentioning it to me. Do I get bored talking about it? Like hell I do. It was my moment of moments.

I have to admit my life didn't change massively - for example, I still lived in the same house. People's attitude towards me changed, though. For me to have beaten one of the game's greatest ever players and to beat him on the final black captured people's imagination. It's 20 years on and I still speak at dinners about that match. When you talk about the final it goes deathly silent. People still love listening to the tale

They say it was 18 million or so but it was actually far more. Millions more were watching in clubs and pubs. There were even tales of lorry drivers being stuck on cross-Channel ferries because people were so engrossed in the match that they refused to give up their seats in front of the telly to move their cars”

STEVE DAVIS isi aminteste si el : “I was 8-0 up and then missed a green to give me a good chance of going 9-0 up. Of course, it all went wrong after that point. I suffered my worst night's sleep, having found myself only 9-7 in front after Sunday's evening session. I was still two frames ahead but I was quite distraught - I never recovered from letting that lead go.

I remembered a tournament down in Reading where Dennis faced Cliff Thorburn and Cliff said in a TV interview: "I've got the Bulldog now." Dennis was like a bulldog in the final against me, he got a grip on my leg but wouldn't let go.

I don't actually remember much of the Crucible final. All I can remember is that it was a horrible feeling. I don't look back on the match with any good memories. While it was happening, it wasn't an enjoyable experience. There was a silver lining though. By winning the championship, Dennis got the respect he deserved as a player.

Best of 35 ... Every ingredient was there. Hot favourite … underdog … miserable serial winner … jovial loser … the comeback to end all comebacks. When I'm making an after-dinner speech, if I set the scene right then the entire room goes completely quiet. The usual audience at these sporting club dinners comprises frustrated sportsmen who just want to taste for one second what it's like to live through that kind of situation. Dennis and I actually tasted it, so how lucky are we?

But after all these years, it doesn't make a blind bit of difference to me now. As time goes by, Dennis and I will end up having so much fun together on the strength of that one frame. You can't put a price on that. So, no, I don't look back on it as a failure, I look back with thanks that I was involved in something so amazing. But if anything does stick in my throat then it's how the hell did I let him off the hook from 8-0? I guess it was just Dennis's moment and he wasn't going to be denied it.”

Deci, in ce moment au stiut care va fi invingatorul ?

"When that last black disappeared," recunoaste invingatorul.

... ar fi pacat sa sarim peste DAY 1 de la Sheffield, anul trecut : MARK WILLIAMS a imprumutat masina lui STEPHEN HENDRY si s-a repezit pina acasa sa-si vada ţîncul nou-nascut. In ultima clipa s-au hotarit tinerii parinti ce nume sa-i dea. Conor ! Sau poate Connor ?!... La conferinta de presa, ziaristii l-au intrebat : "How do you spell that, Mark ? " "I dunno how to spell it, I just know the name," recunoaste mindrul tatic. "Don't get technical!"
